The FRP++ Workshop 2024 was held at the University of Girona in Spain from 22nd to 24th May 2024. It was a great chance for students to get new ideas, share their work with their peers, and take part in lots of different activities.
The three-day workshop included lots of activities to help students learn, work together, and develop themselves.
On the first day, students got to explore the state-of-the-art AMADE-UdG laboratories during technical visits. These visits showed them the latest advances in composite materials and structural analysis, featuring cutting-edge research and technology. But the day’s main event was the MSc dissertation pitch presentations, where students showed off the exceptional work they’re developing. Students presented their research on composite materials, sparking valuable discussions and feedback from peers and experts, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
On the second day, the keynote seminar of Dr. Carlos Dávila, a Senior Aerospace Researcher at NASA Langley Research Center took place. Dr. Dávila talked about the basics of good engineering practices and what we can learn from past aerospace failures. He also shared some interesting case studies, like the Challenger and Columbia space shuttle disasters, and looked at some amazing engineering feats, like the Douglas DC-3 and the Boeing 737 Max. After the seminar, attendees went on a guided tour of Girona’s historic downtown, where they got to experience the city’s rich culture and beautiful architecture. This cultural immersion added a unique and enjoyable dimension to the workshop, allowing participants to connect with the local heritage. The day ended with a social dinner at L’Arcada Restaurant, which helped students and FRP++ teaching staff network and get to know each other better, and enhanced the sense of community within the FRP++ programme.
The third and final day saw the end of Dr. Carlos Dávila’s seminar. There was also a job fair with companies like Safran, Vestas, ISQ, Eurecat, Compoxy, PIEP, Acciona, and Bold. These partners showed off their composite industry know-how and chatted with students about future prospects and career opportunities.
The FRP++ Workshop 2024 was a great success, with lots of knowledge sharing, skill development and lasting connections made.
